Rawhide Bullwhip

The rawhide whip is the most difficult to make and presents the biggest challenge of all the whips I manufacture. Rawhide is inherently light and requires more extra weight, or lead, to provide good balance. The sixteen overlay in rawhide makes for a very fluid whip with excellent speed. Anything less than a sixteen overlay just does not provide the smooth action that a higher overlay will generate and I very seldom make them.

I have made several whips in a twenty four overlay and while they are very beautiful in appearance I don't feel that they warrant the extra work for the small gain in action.

I obtain all my rawhide from Bill Confer in Hereford, Texas. Bill does an excellent job in preparing the rawhide.

Roo Bullwhip

For many years I refused to use Kangaroo skin simply because we do not raise this species in Texas. I must go further to say that my prayer that I repeat each day is, "God give me sweet words today for tomorrow I will have to eat them" Kangaroo skin is a braider's dream, It is the prettiest and easiest handling material ever made
