These bullwhips are all designed for the cowboy. Most of them prefer a whip with a twelve inch handle, six foot body and a thirty two inch fall. Some customers prefer a larger handle, up to sixteen inches in length, and I can supply these lengths in addition to the ones shown on this site. I have not put a lash on the whip handle in many years out of my concern for the safety of the cowboy. Several pen riders in feedlots have been jerked from the saddle and severely injured because they had lashed the whip to their wrists and the fall and popper became entangled in the fence.
Most of our bullwhips are used to gather and manage livestock. A cowboy who is riding a rim can pop a whip above a draw and flush livestock into open country. Bullwhips have many useful and beneficial uses and can make the life of the cowboy much easier but they can be dangerous and should be used with caution at all times.

Florida Cow Whip
Sometime ago an old friend sent a wood handle that he had found, and wondered what type of whip had been on the south end. It had a 1/2 inch port in the small end, with two small holes that were drilled from the port hole exiting out to the handle. I explained to Pat, that in Florida this type of whip had a nylon body, that was tied through the axel port and tied to the handle. I told her that I was not from Florida and it would be hard for me to braid nylon. She laughed and said your not from Australia, but you love to work kangaroo. This is my version of a Florida Cow Whip.

"Head'em up, Move'em out,"
RAWHIDE
A month or so ago, Bill Taylor of Griffin Ga. sent word that a friend of his had given him an old black stock whip that had been in a storage closet for many years. He also said that he had another whip that had a very pretty handle and that both were in need of repair. A few days later I received both whips. When I opened the package, I found a twisted root handle stock whip with a cowhide body, 8 overlay. When I pulled the old black whip out, I went into a mild cardiac shock. I have no idea of the age of the whip, but it is probably the prettiest piece of braid work I have every seen. The handle was a 36 overlay with several variation tapering to a 24 at the handle tip. The crown knot was an 8 bight, 7 part knot with 2 passes. The body of the stock whip was a 24 overlay with herringbone[ over 6 under 6] to common 4 braid[4X6]. The transactions changed about every 8 inches ; all the way to the tip. I called it "The Gay Whip". Thank God it did get out of the closet for everyone to admire.I used a lite dressing and did no repair.
The twisted root handle stock whip had a lot of hard miles; and close to its bitter end. The handle was probably the only part of the whip to try to salvage.
The Gulf Coast cowboys have used rawhide whips for many years, while southwest cowboys used rein knots to decorate their headstalls and romals. I have thought that the combination of the two would make a unique piece. Also it was the only way to enforce the handle. The body is a 16 braid overlay, 8 foot long.
I would like to express my thanks to Bill for letting me keep the old black stockwhip for a month. It is a great work of art
